Rick, Flux, and Cylon take a quick (and not-so-serious) look at the original Alone in the Dark, the granddaddy of survival horror. This classic PC title might have laid the foundation for games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but its tank controls, dated visuals, and quirky design choices make it more of a curiosity than a spine-tingler in 20XX.
Rick leads the way through the haunted mansion, doing his best to wrestle with the game’s notoriously clunky controls, while Flux critiques the game’s "innovative" yet unintentionally hilarious camera angles. Cylon provides running commentary on the early-90s polygonal graphics and the absurdly dramatic monster encounters that turn every corner into a potential comedy skit.
As the game’s frustrations mount and the team’s patience wears thin, they embrace the chaos, riffing on everything from the stiff animations to the overly dramatic soundtrack. While it’s not a deep dive, this quick look delivers plenty of laughs, sharp commentary, and a nostalgic glimpse at survival horror’s awkward beginnings. GAME BIO: Alone in the Dark is a 1992 survival horror video game designed by Frédérick Raynal. Developed and published by Infogrames in 1992 for MS-DOS, the game was eventually ported to Mac OS, the PC-98, the FM Towns, the 3DO, the Acorn Archimedes, and iOS.
